Just like any other agency or business keeps upgrading their products and service to enhance consumer experience and retention—think of Google as a company which upgrades its algorithm(system) to provide better consumer experiences. And that includes—rewarding the generous sites—penalizing one who enjoys malpractices to increase visibility of their site.
Before getting ahead with what penguin does and why so? Let me explain you about this tech word algorithm—algorithm is a detailed step-by-step instruction set or formula for solving a problem or completing a task. In computing, programmers write algorithms that instruct the computer how to perform a task. Its just like a math problem you solve going step by step following certain instructions. I’m sure—You might have come across a website in Google that was compiled with pop ups and innocuous ads— wasn’t that irritating, of course and you left the site next millisecond.
This is made Google to upgrade its algorithm called as—penguin algorithm.
It was launched in 2012—Now a part of core algorithm—according to Google.
The main purpose of penguin algorithm is designed to penalize the sites— Sites that have purchased links from— link farm, link exchange in order to increase its quality and better search engine ranking.
Or have acquired low-quality links through places such as low-quality directories, blog spam, or link badges and infographics, so that they don’t appear on search results in Google search bar.
Penguin evolved with Time,
Google announced that it will be making Penguin 4.0 a part of its core algorithm. “After a period of development and testing, we are now rolling out an update to the Penguin algorithm in all languages,” said Google’s Gary Illyes from the Search Ranking Team on a Google Webmaster blog post.
This update has made penguin it work on real time:
Earlier sites crushed under penguin were recovered once webmaster considered there improvement and its presence on internet. But penguin needed to be again refreshed after recrawling and reindexing the site. With new update Penguin data is refreshed almost immediately, as soon as the page is recrawled and reindexed by Google, changes will be made to the system.
So now it will work on real time and show real time results on it.
It has became way more granular—“Penguin now devalues spam by adjusting ranking based on spam signals, rather than affecting the ranking of the whole site,” Illyes said in the post.
That means website will be impacted on page by page basis rather than whole domain going under penalization.
Algorithms are subject to expected updates as internet is evolving with time it signifies us to evolve with it.
